Carl Pappe was born in Hungary in 1900 and immigrated to the United States as a young boy. Living in Ohio, he was an apprentice to a Hungarian muralist, eventually enrolling in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in the mid 1920s. In 1929 he worked in stage design for Paramount Studios in New York. In the 1930’s he moved to Mexico City where he befriended artists like Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo and once acted as a tour guide to Amelia Earhart!

This signed, framed etching by Pappe is called “Mother & Child” of which there were 16 made (based on another I found that was unframed and marked 7/16). I have not removed this from the frame to see if this one is numbered or if there are any other marks.

The frame on this is 14.75″ x 10.5″ (approximate). The artwork (just the part showing, does not include what might be under the mat) is approximately 10″ x 5 5/8″.

This is a beautiful piece of mid-century modernist art for your collection or gallery wall.
